The megalith trail
A walking route has been laid out to allow visitors to discover the sites from the outside.
The footpaths around the Carnac alignments, used by many visitors to the site, were previously impassable in all seasons. To improve access to the alignments and encourage the development of walking areas, in 2016 the CMN, the Morbihan department and the municipality of Carnac signed an agreement to create a walking and hiking route along the Ménec, Kermario and Kerlescan alignments and the Saint-Michel tumulus, which are managed by the various signatories. Along the way, visitors can download an Alignements de Carnac application to help them understand the site better. The itinerary includes a section accessible to people with reduced mobility, to the north of the alignments, to provide a view of the site.In this sector, the property boundary is located not by a fence but by a long low wall dating from the modern era, built of dry stone. It was in a very poor state of repair and was restored between 2018 and 2020 by teams from the Auray Quiberon Terre Atlantique Community of Communes' integration project, using traditional walling techniques. In line with the departmental plan for walking and hiking routes, this route is also part of the application to have the megalithic landscapes listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A one-way traffic system, to be introduced in autumn 2022, will also relieve traffic congestion on a section of the Route des Alignements, which is the busiest in high season (from Toul Chignan to Le Ménec), and encourage soft traffic (bicycles, pedestrians).the path is open from Le Ménec to Kerlescan, with free access all year round and no closing times.
